One of the biggest sporting events of the year is resuming this weekend in Kenora after a four year absence.
A total of 24 teams are competing in the North American First Nation Tournament of Champions.
Rob Hrabec is one of the organizers and says they have three divisions once again this year.
“Our Open Division, which is basically open to anyone, men, women, to young and old, as long as you are willing to compete you can play in that division,” explains Hrabec.
“There are 14 teams in that division. Our Old Timers Division has six teams in it, and then our Women’s Division this year has four teams.”
Hrabec adds that teams were eager to be involved once again in the hockey tournament.
“There was an abundance of interest in coming back to this tournament this year,” says Hrabec.
“The issue we ran into the was the availability of hotels in Kenora.”
Hrabec says they have $67,000 in prize money up for grabs with $25,000 for first place in the Open Division.
The tournament will begin Friday morning and run until Sunday night at the Moncrief Construction Sports Center and the Bowman Electric Keewatin Memorial Arena.
