The Ford government is defending its commitment to helping with First Nations housing.

The NDP says communities have solutions but are stuck behind government red tape and passed around from one government to another.

NDP critic Guy Bourgoin says Attawaspiskat has been waiting thirty years for help.

Speaking at Queen’s Park, he says there has been little action since a task force was set up in 2014.

“Then in 2018, a memorandum of understanding, then a new renewed relation commitment signed by your minister. In 2019, all Attawapiskat got so far are two plastic Igloos as temporary housing. Premier, First Nation chiefs are telling us your government is not acting on any of their issues,” says Bourgouin.

Northern Development Parliamentary Assistant Kevin Holland responded to says it is the federal government that should be responding.

“While the Federal government is responsible for housing on reserve, Ontario provides support for off-reserve, affordable housing, supportive housing, capital repairs, and rent supplements for Indigenous people,” says Holland.

The Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP says they will continue to lobby the feds for adequate housing.
