The NDP says a report released last week by Ontario’s Ombudsman is very concerning for the child welfare system.
In the report called Missing in Action: Misty’s Story, the 13 year old Indigenous girl ran away seven times and during that time she was sexually assaulted and had one drug overdose.
Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa is urging the provincial government to take action.
“You should shut down Johnson (Children’s Services) because it’s children that pay full with their lives when do not take action…when you just speak those words you are speaking,” Mamakwa told the Ontario Legislature Tuesday morning during Question Period.
The Ombudsman’s report makes 58 recommendations for three child care agencies, including 31 of them directed at Johnson’s Children’s Services, which located in southern Ontario.
But Minister of Children, Community and Social Services Michael Parsa says action has been taken on all of the Ombudsman’s recommendations.
“The three organizations in the case have accepted all 58 recommendations, but we are asking, and we will make sure that all 58 recommendations are implemented swiftly so that this doesn’t happens to a single child or youth across the province.”
NDP leader Marit Stiles says the staff with Johnson waited to report Misty missing to the police for more than 4 hours, resulting in her disappearance for 19 days.
