Statistics Canada says northwestern Ontario’s population is continuing to grow older, as the average age in the region took another dip through the 2021 Census.
Statistics Canada released their newest set of information gathered through the 2021 Census, detailing the Kenora District’s average age, age demographics and population size. The Kenora District includes a number of municipalities and First Nation communities throughout the area.
Their report shows the district’s population evened out at 66,000 through the 2021 Census, about a 500 resident improvement compared to 2016. We’ve added roughly 9,000 people to the region since 2011.
The three largest age demographics in the region include 41,115 people between the ages of 15 and 64, 14,065 youth under the age of 14, and 10,820 residents considered 65 and older.
The average age for the district in 2021 is listed at 38.8. In 2016, the area’s average age of 37.6.
Meanwhile, the City of Kenora’s population dropped slightly from 15,096 in 2016 to 14,967 in 2022. That’s been a continuing trend for Kenora. The population was listed at 15,348 in 2011.
Population sizes are continuing to drop in the Dryden area as well. Dryden’s population increased from 7,617 in 2011 to 7,749 in 2016, but it dropped back down to 7,388 by 2021.
Meanwhile, the Sioux Lookout area has seen continued growth over the last ten years. In 2011, their population was listed at 5,037 and it grew to 5,272 by 2016, with the 2021 Census reporting a growth of 600 residents to 5,839 by 2021. That represents a 10 per cent growth over the last five years.
