Police have recently opened the Trans-Canada to one lane of traffic between Kenora and Vermilion Bay.
It was closed following a fatal accident around 1 a.m. today. The OPP are still working with crews to re-open Hwy. 17 to two lanes, but there's no estimate on when work will be completed.
The Trans-Canada between Kenora and Vermilion Bay has been closed because of an accident. Jan Waligorski has been waiting in Vermilion Bay to 1:30 this morning waiting to pass. As he was heading east earlier, he saw the accident.
"I saw the accident up there. It was a truck that lost its trailer and he's in the rock cut, but there’s also a pick-up truck pulling a tandem trailer behind him. I know when I came around the corner, I almost slammed into him, and I had to go over to the left hand side to get around him," Waligorski said.
Waligorski was in the first semi in a long line of backed up traffic waiting to head west.
Due to dangerous road conditions school buses have be canceled for Kenora, Dryden, Red Lake, Ear Falls and Ignace. Bus transportation in Sioux Lookout is expected to run as usual. Public transit has also been canceled today.
