The Pikangikum First Nation has started to train first responders in response to several fatal fires in that community.

The first class of Emergency Medical Responders graduated just last week.

The Independent First Nation Alliance says it’s developed a training program for the communities it serves.

Also, in partnership with Indigenous Services Canada the process of sourcing, purchasing and installing 500 fire alarms and carbon monoxide alarms has started.

The Alliance says it’s also purchasing new fire extinguishers for the community.
