Property taxes expected to rise

Kenora residents will have to pay more for property taxes this year.

City council met last night to go over the Solid Waste, Sewer and Water and Operating budgets.

Right now they are looking at a 5.36% increase.

Mayor Andrew Poirier says everything costs more due to the high rate of inflation.

He adds their insurance costs more, gas for the city’s vehicles is more, as are heating and electrical costs for their buildings.

The one break the city did get this year is a $511,000 discount on policing costs, or about 1.8 % of their budget.

Initially the city was looking at a 7.16 % increase.

The budgets are expected to be debated again at their March 8th Committee of the Whole meeting, and passed at the March 22nd open meeting.
