The Solicitor General's office is investigating the early release of one of their inmates. Darren Tom of Whitefish Bay was released from the district jail last month, only to be recalled.

In an email, spokesman Brent Ross confirmed that an improper release occurred at the Kenora Jail on October 19, and the individual was returned to custody on November 12.

"The ministry takes its responsibilities in this area very seriously," Ross said in the email.

"The vast majority of improper releases are due to administrative or technical error by any one of the justice sector partners.  If an improper release occurs, the police are notified and all efforts are made to locate the individual and return them to custody.  The ministry also conducts an internal investigation," the spokesman continued.

"Given this matter is under investigation, it would be inappropriate to provide further comment," Ross concluded.
