The first woman to lead the RCMP is stepping down.
Brenda Lucki is resigning from her position as Commissioner of the police force. She made the announcement in a letter posted to the RCMP website.
“Today I announced that I have made a personal decision to retire,” wrote Lucki. “This was not an easy decision.”
Lucki’s future became unclear after allegations surfaced she pressured investigators of the 2020 mass shooting in Nova Scotia to release information about the types of guns used in the murders to help advance new gun laws being ushered by the federal government.
The allegations came to light last June when handwritten notes penned by RCMP Supt. Darren Campbell during an April 28th meeting with Lucki was released in a report published by the investigators associated with the public inquiry into the mass shooting.
The notes indicated Lucki was upset the specific gun models were not included in a press conference in the days after the shooting, citing a “promise” made to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed her to the position in 2018.
“As Commissioner, I was asked to modernize and address the RCMP‘s internal challenges. This was a significant mandate and with the support of my senior executive team and the commitment of all RCMP employees, we’ve accomplished a lot,” said Lucki.
Her last day will be March 17.
