The Municipality of Red Lake is looking to build a new Red Lake Events Centre and 500-seat arena thanks to the support from the provincial government.

Kenora – Rainy River MPP, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister of Northern Development, Greg Rickford, announced that Red Lake will see $369,550 to hire engineers to produce technical drawings of the proposed facility.

Stantec, an engineering and architecture company, previously helped Red Lake with site selection, capital cost and economic impact studies. The proposed centre would include a 500-seat arena, a 350-person performing arts centre, a multipurpose space, a climbing wall and a variety of amenities.

The announcement was part of a $4.9 million investment into tourism projects across Northern Ontario.

“Northern Ontario is an incredibly scenic region, with limitless potential for tourism,” says Minister Rickford. “These investments will help northern tourism operations expand their offerings, create jobs and promote regional prosperity, while showcasing this beautiful part of Ontario to visitors from across the province and around the world.”

While the remaining projects are located outside of northwestern Ontario, Destination Northern Ontario is seeing $70,000 to develop francophone travel itineraries that will showcase the Kenora community, as well as seven others.
