Ontario’s Minister of Northern Development is pleased to see the Manitoba government going ahead with twinning their portion of the Trans-Canada Highway.
On Friday, Manitoba premier Heather Stefanson announced 16 kilometers from Falcon Lake to the Ontario board would be double-laned.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford it’s a good step forward.
“I’ve known premier Stefanson for a very long time, and I know she has a deep appreciation for the infrastructure requirements of this stretch of the road,” Rickford said following the announcement of Manitoba’s decision to twin the Trans-Canada Highway from Falcon Lake.
“I know we’ve spoken frequently about it over the years, and upon becoming premier had said this was one her top priorities, and she’s delivered on that.”
Calls to twin the highway increased after a fatal crash in 2019 killed father and son, Mark and Jacob Lugli, who were driving from Dryden to a golf tournament in Selkirk.
In the meantime, Rickford says the twinning of the Trans-Canada east of the Manitoba border is proceeding very well.
“It gone very well. The story here is incredible. The Indigenous owned and operated companies and joint ventures that are involved, in everything from the beginning of the tree cutting, sweeping, clearing, crushing and surfacing is ready to move.”
Rickford adds that phase two of the twinning project has been already been approved and will take them to the Rush Bay weigh scales.
