Sakari Manninen scored a power-play goal in overtime to lift host Finland to a 4-3 win over Canada in a wild gold-medal game at the men's world hockey championship. The Finns held a 3-1 lead late in the third before the Canadians struck for two goals with the goalie pulled to force overtime. Czechia defeated the United States 4-3 in the bronze-medal final.
 
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jason Spezza announced his retirement over the weekend after 19 N-H-L seasons. Spezza finished with 995 points in 1,248 regular-season N-H-L games, with another 76 points in 97 playoff games. The 38-year-old is moving into the Maple Leafs' front office as a special assistant to GM Kyle

Yesterday was an off day for the N-H-L playoffs, but action ramps up tonight when the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes play the seventh-and-deciding game of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in Raleigh, North Carolina. The winner will play the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final, starting Wednesday.


Edmonton Oilers' assistant coach Dave Manson is happy that his son Josh, a defenceman for the Colorado Avalanche, has qualified for the Western Conference Final. While the Oilers assistant wants to beat his son in the N-H-L series that starts Tuesday night in Denver, he is extra excited to finally meet his young granddaughter, Gemma Grace.

The Toronto Blue Jays overcame two homers by Shohei Ohtani to beat the Los Angeles Angels 11-10 last night to improve their unbeaten streak to five games.  Toronto earned its first four-game sweep of the Angels in 30 years. The Jays open a three-game series tomorrow against the visiting Chicago White Sox.
