Suspended Nishawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Derek Fox is denying allegations that he violated NAN’s code of conduct.

In a statement issued Thursday on social media, Fox states he has been “wrongfully and possibly defamed by statements that are untrue” and is calling on the Chiefs of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation’s 49 communities to call for an election to be held within the next 60 to 90 days.

He believes this is the most efficient way to put NAN’s governance on solid ground.

A snap election would dissolve the entire executive council which includes Fox and three Deputy Grand Chiefs.

Fox, who was elected Grand Chief in 2021 and previously served a pair of terms as a Deputy Grand Chief, was suspended with pay on Monday after he was alleged to have violated the organization’s Executive Council Code of Conduct prompting an internal investigation.
