The 2nd annual Kenora Science Festival kicked off on Tuesday (September 21, 2021), and will be hosting fun science activities throughout the week.

“These are events that are catered to people of all ages so there’s something for everyone to participate in. There are some school programs happening with schools,” said Lora Klausen Senior Scientist of Northern Initiatives at Science North.

“This year we’re really excited because we’re able to actually host more events, we’re able to invite people out to events. It’s really a great opportunity for people to celebrate, and I think people are just so eager to get out and take part in any kind of event they can,” added Klausen

The festival is put on by the managing partner Science North in partnership with many local groups, which include: City of Kenora, Matiowski Farmer’s Market, IISD, Kenora Catholic District School Board, Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, Keewatin Patricia District School Board, The MUSE, NorthWestern Ontario Innovation Centre, Confederation Lake of the Woods Campus, Bimose Tribal Council, Grand Council Treaty #3

"Congratulations to all the partners on the launch of the second annual Kenora Science Festival. With our partners, we are happy to extend our Bluecoat brand of interactive and hands-on science in person this year. We look forward to another successful year working with Kenora Festival partners to create memorable and educational experiences for everyone within the community.” said Guy Labine, Science North CEO

Matiowski Farmers Market played host to the first activity of the festival as contestants got to perform an experiment to create “Elephants Toothpaste”.

Contestants filled their beakers with food colouring, dish soap, and a reactive agent to create a thermo dynamic reaction that created the “toothpaste”.

“It represents science and its a great visual of how the partnership team works together to bring this great festival to light,” says Klausen.

Klausen explained that the overall goal of the Kenora Science Festival is to bring science communications to all across the north. Kenora is the fourth community involved in hosting a Science Festival.

“The festival’s are a way of being able to have a stronger presence in the communities. It really strengthens our relationship with partners. It’s really important for us to be in all of Northern Ontario, and bring that to people that can’t visit our centres,” noted Klausen
