The U18 AAA Kenora Thistles held a skill development camp this past weekend to allow players to take to the ice and take part in skill development drills. Thistles head coach Scott Parsons and his staff were able to evaluate players leading into their selection camp in the coming weeks.

“The skill development camp this weekend went really, really well. The amount of talent that we had on the ice was really impressive. It was nice to see these kids get back onto the ice again and start to get back into the swing of things,” said Parsons

Players were split up into two groups and rotated between hour-on-ice sessions. Players were put through a mixture of drills that tested their passing, shooting, and skating skills.

The camp was made up of a mixture of Kenora-based players but also a lot of players from the surrounding communities, which according to Parsons was nice to see.

“It’s just building the program at this point and making sure that everybody within our area is interested in playing at the level of hockey that we provide. It’s nice to see that more people from Northwestern Ontario are starting to possibly aspire to come and play for the program and play at such a high level,” added Parsons

Besides the excitement around the skill development camp this past weekend, the Thistles full league schedule was released last week.

Starting September 25, 2021, the Thistles will start their season off with five consecutive home games, which could bring some excitement from the community to the Thistles, according to Parsons.

“It’s going to be nice to not jump on a bus immediately to start the season. I’m hoping that with the way things are going right now, we can look at having bigger crowds and start to build some excitement. To have those 5 home games right off the hop, it's a chance for us to build some momentum and some excitement around the team,” says Parsons

The Thistles main selection camp will take place from August 13 to 15, 2021, with the team being formed on Sunday, August 15, 2021.
