Despite some recent high profile incidents in downtown Kenora, the rate of violent crime stayed the same last year as the year before.
Inspector Jeff Duggan says there was actually a zero percent increase in violent crime.
“When you break down the assaults, sexual assaults, criminal harassment, the domestic…some are up and some are down,” Duggan told the Kenora Police Services Board recently.
“Overall, our total violent crime occurrences are event for 2021 and 2022.”
Duggan notes they did see a 10 percent increase in property crime.
“Some of our numbers are down. Break and Enters are down 11 percent, our Theft Over ($5,000) down 4 percent, but where we see the increase, and what really changes that number are Theft Under ($5,000) occurrences, which were up 19 percent and our Mischief that are up 7 percent.”
On the lighter side, Duggan notes they did have an usual theft late last year, when an ice shack was stolen.
“It was recovered in Winnipeg and charges were laid in Winnipeg. How somebody steals an ice shack, I’m not really sure, but it happened.”
That’s just one of the incidents of Theft Over $5,000.
The others are more usual, with one ATV and three cars stolen in the last two months of 2022.
