Young moms in the Kenora area will now have more options for help thanks to the Women's Shelter Saakaate House.

The Women’s Shelter Saakaate House, in partnership with the Kenora District Services Board (KDSB) and the Kenora Rainy River Child and Family Services, have created a brand-new program to help young moms.

The program, called The Kendall House Young Moms program, is named after its location, the Kendall House Bed & Breakfast.

Kendall Trembath is the Executive Director of the Women's Shelter Saakaate House, she explained why they created this program, “Well, the shelter has been in Kenora for 35 years and in that time, we have noticed that some young moms just need a little extra time with some supports in order to be successful.”

The young mothers who are selected for the program will be able to stay at the Kendall house for up to two years with their children (under age four). The program will be open for mothers aged 16 to 29 and will be able to accommodate up to four families at once.

“There will be events every week so that the women can learn and make a community together – moving forward,” said Trembath.

Trembath went on to talk about some of the other programs that they offer, “We offer support and advocacy. We have a mental health therapist on staff and we have a transitional housing support worker on staff. As well, we have children’s services on staff.”

“All you have to do is bring yourself in and we can help you get access to everything else you need,” she concluded.

The Women’s Shelter Saakaate House is a confidential 24-hour support and safety service, if you or someone you know needs help, you can find information by clicking HERE.
