It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Daniel “Dan” Getson in the morning hours of Saturday February 3rd, 2024. Dan passed away peaceful in his sleep free of any pain.

Left to mourn the loss are his wife and partner of over 45 years Betty Getson, sons Bruce, Richard, Darren (Suanne) Getson, and daughter Kelly (Bill) Webb. He also leaves behind with fond memories of their grandpa/poppa, 6 grandchildren, Jasmine Clarke, Paige and Devlin Webb, Trevor, Anna, and Brianne Getson. He was also a great grandpa to 2 boys Lucas and Blake Clarke. Dan will also be deeply missed by his older brother Ralph Getson and younger sister Doris Soucie (Getson) Uncle Dan also leaves behind many nieces and nephews to mourn his loss as well as many cousins and family friends.

Dan was predeceased by his parents John and Laura “Winnifred” Getson, and baby sister Jacquline.

Dan was born August 26th, 1937 to John “Jack” and Laura “Winnifred” Getson in Dryden Ontario where he spent his childhood and teens years before moving out to Calgary, Alberta to pursue a job in
Construction. After spending a few years out west, he returned to Dryden and began working for The Board of Education before returning to the Dryden mill and working in the Woodlands carpenter shop from where he proudly retired in 1999.

Dan was an active member in the community and had a love for sports. He could often be found on a baseball field coaching boys, and ladies’ fastball as well as playing in many a different league. It was through this love of sports that he met his wife Betty and they enjoyed not only time spent on the baseball field, but time spent in curling rinks as they both were avid curlers. Some of their fondest memories were times spent with friends in the curling rinks and bonspiels. Dan enjoyed time spent with friends and would often be seen driving his tractor down the country road, family hanging on the side heading to the neighbors for a good ole fashioned dance party.

In the early 80s, they purchased a cabin on Spine Lake, where Dan enjoyed many weeks/weekends with his family and friends. Everything from hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling and enjoying life to the fullest. Dan worked hard on taking the old camp and turning it in to a beautiful home away from home for himself and family. He was proud of it and it showed. He enjoyed cabin life to the fullest for many years.

In 2006, Dan and Betty began a new chapter in their lives and moved to Kenora where he would spend his final years. Dan made friends with other men in the building and would often be found sitting outside chatting with them. He also enjoyed being one of the maintenance men in the building. And took pride in being able to help out and fix things around the building. He loved being able to help others out. He was always willing to help anyone with very few questions asked and would give someone the shirt off his back if it would help. Dan also enjoyed many hours spent in his favorite chair watching his beloved sports. There wasn’t a time sports weren’t playing on the tv if he was home. Everything from hockey, baseball, curling to poker or even ping-pong when he was really desperate. He looked forward to phone calls from his children, grandchildren, and his sister Doris and brother Ralph and treasured the times he spoke with them.

Dan was a steadfast, hardworking, strong, loyal, caring man who loved his family deeply, and valued his friendships and relationships, but he was also a man of few words and didn’t say those 3 words often, yet he made sure one always knew how much he cared and loved them. It showed in many other ways.

His presence here on earth has left a mark on so many hearts, and he will be deeply missed by all those who knew him. Rest in peace Dan, you will forever be loved.

We want to Thank the Drs., nurses, and staff on floor 3 at Lake of The Woods hospital for all their hard work, kindness, and compassion while taking care of our beloved Dan.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to It’s a Dog’s Life, Box 291, Keewatin ON, P0X 1C0.
