Women in Kenora will be getting together to honour and highlight each other’s work in the community tonight.

The Women’s Shelter, Saakaate House is hosting its Embrace Equity Dinner tonight at 901 Westside.

Staff will be awarding their 2023 Woman of Merit Award, in honour of a ‘woman in the community who demonstrates a commitment and advocacy for the lives of women in children in our community, country and internationally.’

But Executive Director of Saakaate House, Kendall Trembath, says tonight’s events will include much more – with local artisans, trivia, guest speakers and more.

“It will be a wonderful evening of celebrating women,” Trembath explains.

“People are invited to think about the difference between equality and equity. Not everyone starts at the same place. So, how do we make it equal? While knowing that people are starting differently?” she adds.

Tonight’s events begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will be available on a donation basis. Funds will support the Saakaate House, and locally made necklaces will also be available for purchase.

Guests will also be able to enjoy trivia, macarons by Enjoy by Andrea and local photographer Lynsey Jordanna will be capturing the night’s events.

Dorothy Beach was the winner of the 2021 Woman of Merit award after being chosen for the inaugural award for her dedication to education, the positive impact she has made for the lives of other women and girls and her commitment to the community.

In 2022, Kenora’s Tracey Benoit was recognized as the Woman of Merit after being nominated for her contributions within the education sector and community.
