It was a time for charity tournaments in July. The final Mike Richards Charity Golf Tournament kicked off the month, in benefit of the Kenora Rotary Splash Park. Over the years, the annual tournament has raised over $230,000.

The 22nd Annual MNP and Lake of the Woods District Hospital Charity Golf Classic had another successful tournament. Last year, the tournament raised $40,000 where seven new psychiatric beds were purchased for the hospital.

Kenora’s Gabe Mastromatteo scored a couple of significant medals in July. he 16-year-old took bronze in the 100 metre breastroke at the 2018 Canadian Swimming Trials in Edmonton. He later won gold  in the 100-metre breaststroke at the Canadian junior championships in Winnipeg.

Joe Murphy’s story came to light. The former NHL’er – who is battling addiction, concussions and homelessness – is still living on the streets of Kenora. A first overall draft pick of Detroit, he played 15 seasons, including a Stanley Cup win with Mark Messier and the Oilers in 1990.
