Firefighters are battling a hundred-hectare fire north of Whitedog. It's burning near Huston Lake, not far from the Manitoba border.

At the end of the day, yesterday, there were 78 active fires in the northwest region, including new fires in the Red Lake, Kenora and Sioux Lookout Districts.

Residents and visitors are reminded the forest fire hazard is considered high to extreme, so they should take precautions, especially in windy weather.

Northwest Region:

·Kenora Fire 71 is located approximately five kilometres from the Manitoba border near Huston Lake. Air attack planes were working this 100 hectare fire throughout the afternoon. The fire is not under control.

·Kenora Fire 70 is located on an island on Populus Lake approximately 30 kilometres east of Sioux Narrows. At the time of this posting the fire was not under control.

·Kenora Fire 72 is a 0.2 hectare lightning start just west of Wingiskus Lake in Eagle/Snowshoe Provincial Park. It is not under control.

·Sioux Lookout Fire 74 is located 37 kilometres southeast of Weagamow First Nation in the far north. At 2.5 hectares, the fire is under observation.

·Sioux Lookout Fire 76 is a new lightning start approximately 22 kilometres north of the community of Sioux Lookout of a large peninsula on Lac Seul. The 0.1 hectare fire is not under control.
