CP Rail staff in the district are set to walk off the job this evening. They're still in contract talks with management, in an effort to avoid a strike.
Workers also walked off the job in 2012. Across the country, about 3,400 train operators and signalling workers are involved.
According to the Teamsters web site, "CP’s final offer failed to address the issues. It also underestimated workers’ anger at the company’s abusive labour relations policy and management practices."
Teamsters voted 98.1 per cent against CP’s final offer Friday. Electrical workers voted 97.2 per cent against CP’s final offer on Friday.
Members of two separate unions are set to strike at 10 p.m. Eastern Time to back contract demands. A walkout could see a shutdown of freight service, and delays for passenger trains that share the CP Rail tracks.
