The Wabaseemoong Independent Nations community is starting the process to take down their old school building.

The former school had to be abandoned as the building began to sink into the clay, which led to bending door-frames and sparks from electrical outlets. The remains of the old school were also damaged in a fire earlier this year.

The community’s new school building – the Mizhakiiwetung Memorial School - opened in 2011, after years of lobbying the provincial and federal governments. The 55,000 square foot building cost roughly $25 million.

Community members are being invited to help with the demolition of the structure, which is scheduled to begin shortly.
