A correctional officer has been released and taken to hospital for assessment, after a hostage-taking at the Kenora Jail this afternoon. Firefighters were called shortly after 2:30 p.m., along with paramedics and police.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Greg Flood, said the public's safety wasn't in jeopardy, as a result of the incidents at the jail earlier today.
"Our thoughts are with the officer and his family during this difficult time. We want to thank all the front line staff at the Kenora Jail that worked to secure the release of the correctional officer. We also want to thank local first responders that attended the facility to assist," it said in a prepared statement issued by the ministry.
The identities of the officer -- or the inmates involved -- haven't been released. A small fire had been extinguished, before the firefighters arrived, and no further action was required.
