The Kenora District Services board is looking to build a supportive housing unit in Kenora.
Chief Administrative Officer Henry Wall explains what that is.
"What the program offers is staffing on site around the clock, to support individuals who may have been on the street for a very long time. This is about a housing first approach and those supports are coming to the individual, rather then hoping that individuals can navigate the system on their own," he said.
The services board has made an offer to purchase a portion of the vacant lot next to the Kenora Armoury on 9th St North.
"We've identified this piece of property as a suitable location, but it does have to go through a rezoning process," he said.
The aim of the program is that those individuals living in the supportive housing will gain the skills they need to move on to other accommodations in the future.
Wall said a similar project opened in Sioux Lookout, approximately 6 month ago, and has been very successful.
The project is in partnership with Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS).
