Downtown parking in Kenora has always been tight, but that might be changing soon.

Kenora's Shopping Mall parking lot was purchased by the city in January, and renovations are close to being completed. Kenora City Clerk Heather Kasprick says that the extra parking will make a big difference this summer.

“I believe it will be a great enhancement to the struggles and challenges of parking in the summer time. July and August, our community is very busy and parking is at a premium. These 120 extra spots will open up quite a lot of availability in the downtown area,” she said.

Kasprick encourages local residents to use the lot this summer.

“We're just really going to encourage, especially our local residents, to use that lot for day parking, and leased parking, to encourage leaving spots in the downtown area for our visitors, so that we're promoting shopping downtown and things like that,” she said.

Kasprick notes that the lot will have a pay-ticket machine with a fee of $1 per hour.

The original estimate for the project to be completed was June 1.
