First Nation leaders are taking a close look at Friday's announcement from Ottawa. With more than half the number of children in care across the country, the federal government is promising legislation to help repatriate children to their home communities.
Over the last year, more than 65 meetings involving 2,000 participants were held. The new laws would also help implement recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Report.
First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation children make up 7.7 per cent of the population under 15, but represent 52.2 per cent of children in foster care in private homes.
