The Lake of the Woods District Hospital celebrated the grand opening of the new Stovel Surgical Services, Operating Rooms and Medical Device Reprocessing Department. The renovation was approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Small Hospital Capital Funding umbrella in January 2013, in order to address the major underlying infrastructure deficiencies, infection control and safety issues with the old space.
This was the first major upgrade to that area of the hospital since 1967.
Donna Makowski Interim CEO and Vice President of Patient Services said the entire hospital is happy to see the project completed.
"All departments were affected in some way. They've endured working in noisy smelly areas. They've lost storage space, either temporarily or permanently. They've utilized temporary homes to access units and services. Literally there wasn't one single area within the hospital that wasn't affected," she said.
A $1 million donation made in 2007 from community members Richard and Millie Stovel provided the local share of funding for the renovation. To show their gratitude the hospital named the newly renovated area after the Stovels.
