The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is investigating incidents involving commercial fish nets on Lake of the Woods. Fish in the nets were left too long, and the catch had spoiled, when the nets were recovered.
Jolanta Kowalski from the ministry says officers respond quickly to reports of abandonned or lost gill nets. She adds commercial anglers are also encouraged to clearly mark their nets, in order to minimize tampering and waste.
According to the ministry, enforcement officers regularly patrol Lake of the Woods to ensure understanding and compliance with recreational angling regulations. Conservation officers also work with First Nation communities continue to work together to promote responsible, sustainable and safe commercial fishing practices.
