Kenora MP Bob Nault doesn't think trade talks with the U.S. will be finalized anytime soon. Nault is also chairs the foreign affairs committee in Ottawa, and he offers us an insight into trade talks.
"It's not something that can be done very quickly, because you're reviewing chapter after chapter, clause after clause, line after line and there are some new chapters that are being put in place.
Negotiations on an updated NAFTA agreement are set to resume later this week. A deadline of last Friday came and went, as the two sides try to make a deal in the wake of an agreement between Mexico and the United States.
Nault adds the political climate in Washington is also a consideration for Canadian negotiators.
"The uncertainty because of court cases and the concern -- I guess -- that we have in that sort of environment," Nault added, stating the situation diplomatically.
The MP noted the agreement will also try and include issues such as cyber security, which simply wasn't a consideration back in 1980, when the previous agreement was signed.
Talks are set to resume tomorrow.
