The City of Kenora is looking into a partnership that would expand sewer and water services to Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation. Kenora MP Bob Nault weighed in on the potential partnership.
"Rat Portage is a community that makes perfect sense to be connected, water and sewer. So, that agreement is going forward, and this is a very positive thing for the city of Kenora," he said.
Nault says it wouldn't benefit just the first nation.
"It's a positive thing for the City of Kenora because they will have a service agreement with Rat Portage and the Government of Canada, which will bring dollars into Kenora's city coffers for the service they will be providing to the first nation," he said.
Discussions between the two communities have taken place in the past. Specifically, before the amalgamation of Kenora, Keewatin and Jaffray Melick in 2000. In previous years the city didn't have enough capacity to serve both communities.
