Michael Mantha, NDP Indigenous relations and reconciliation critic, has praised Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s recent commitment to clean up mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon River.

He also lauded the commitment to ‘identify all potentially contaminated sites,' in a press release yesterday.

Mantha added the NDP caucus will be watching closely to ensure there's follow through on these commitments, and that the Liberal government follows through on the promise until ‘the fish are safe to eat.'

Yesterday, the province committed to finding sites that are contaminated with mercury near Grassy Narrows and putting in place a plan to clean up the toxin.

The commitment came after Wynne met last week with Grassy Narrows Chief Simon Fobister Sr. and environmentalist David Suzuki, who has been calling for a cleanup of the river.
