It’s a time of change for the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.

At their inaugural board meeting last night, trustees elected Cecile Marcino as the new Board Chair after serving as Vice-Chair for the past 18 years, and Gerald Kleist was elected as the new Vice-Chair. All board trustees were officially sworn into their positions as well.

“I’m excited to work with the returning and new trustees to work as a team to put our kids first, and meet the needs of our students. Really looking forward to looking at the year ahead of us,” said Marcino, who has been on every committee of the board at least once.

“There are some challenges coming up. A new government, a relatively-new board, and we will have some challenges in the next year or two. With the background that I’ve had, and the years spent with this board and what I feel that we were able to accomplish, I feel very confident that I’ll be able to take on those challenges,” said Kleist, who won the Vice-Chair position after a vote between trustees. Barb Gauthier and Dave Cornish were also nominated for the position.

“As a director, it’s nice to have some level of consistency and stability. Having said that, there will be a learning curve with the new appointments, but it’s exciting. Change is good, and it brings a level of enthusiasm and sharpness. We need to be on our toes,” said Director of Education Sean Monteith.

Monteith added that in his over 20 years with the board, this is the first time he has seen an election of two or more candidates. The changes come after former Board Chair Dave Penney retired after 33 years.

Trustees were also appointed to various committees.

- Executive Committee – Barb Gauthier and Bob O’Donohue
- Indigenous Education Advisory Committee – Dave Cornish, Eric Bortlis, Gerald Kleist
- Special Education Advisory Committee – Dave Cornish, Eric Bortlis, Gerald Kleist
- Early Years Advisory Committee – Barb Gauthier and Marilyn Duncalfe
- Parent Involvement Committee – Darrin Head and Michelle Guitard
- Transportation Policy Committee – Jennifer Kitowski and Gerald Kleist
- Ontario Public School Boards’ Association Board of Directors – Jennifer Kitowski and Gerald Kleist
- Ontario Public School Boards’ Association Voting Delegate – Barb Gauthier and Bob O’Donohue
