Now that construction of Freedom Road is underway, there's new hope we may see the twinning of the Trans-Canada started.
"It's a bottleneck, and there are safety concerns," says Kenora Mayor Dave Canfield, noting there was a fatal accident recently. "It's relevant to all of us, in the communities between here and Winnipeg."
In recent years, First Nation leaders have said they wanted to see Freedom Road done, before they would approve the twinning of Highway 17. Funding from the prime minister and Ontario's premier was announced eight years ago.
Earlier today, the minister for Northern Development and Mines, Michael Gravelle, announced funding for the four-laning of the Trans-Canada near Thunder Bay.
A delegation from the City of Kenora is expected to have the twinning issue on their list, when the meet with cabinet ministers next week in Ottawa.
