The federal government is planning to introduce a new stat holiday.

Kenora MP Bob Nault explained.

"I think the objective of this stat holiday is just to recognize aboriginal people," he said.

He explained why the recognition is important.

"The whole issue of reconciliation has always been at the top of this government's agenda, and rebuilding our relationship as it relates to mistakes that we all have made in the past," he explained.

The date of the new holiday hasn't been decided yet. Nault says there are talks of the day falling on either National Indigenous Peoples day on June 21, or a later date

At present there are five days marked as national statutory holidays: Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, and Good Friday.

There are other federal holidays, such as Victoria Day, Remembrance Day, and Thanksgiving, but they are not recognized in every province.
