Mayor Dave Canfield says a change in tax policy has led to a salary increase for council members. While Ottawa used to allow councillors $10,000 tax free -- as payment for mileage and expenses related to council business -- this will no longer be allowed.
After the increase, Kenora's new mayor will get an extra $4,695 for a total of $38,115, while councillors will get an extra $2,348 for a total of $19,058.
Canfield noted he's not running for another term, so he won't benefit from the change.
"It doesn't amount to a lot of money, but at the same time, you want to encourage people to run. They would be going backwards," the mayor noted, if they didn't pass the change for council salaries.
