The weather was just right for a road hockey game at Evergreen Public School today.

Bronco girls and boys hockey teams hosted a tournament and barbecue to raise money for the Evergreen Community Club outdoor rink.

Local hockey hero Mike Richards even joined in on the game. He discussed his connection to the Evergreen outdoor rink.

“It's the rink I spent most of my time at growing up. So it's nice to see that the outdoor rinks are still being run, and being run well,” Richards said. “It gives the kids a place to go and play hockey without having the structure of minor hockey. It gives them the opportunity to go and work on some things in a more relaxed setting.”

Richards was joined by Bronco players and Keewatin-Patricia District School Board hockey academy kids.

One of them was Valleyview's Joey Desousa. He was thrilled to get to play alongside Richards.

“It's fun, never done it before,” he said. “He's really good.”

Desousa made good use of the chance to meet Richards, making sure to get his stick signed.

Kenora Fire and Emergency Services did their part at the event, helping serve customers at the barbecue.

Copperfin Credit Union also lended a helping hand. They also donated $1,000 to the cause.

In total, more than $1,900 was raised to go towards a new ice resurfacer and lights for the Evergreen outdoor rink.
