Kenora residents dealing with a mental health crisis will soon have another option. The safe beds project is meant to divert people from either the hospital or police.
Sara Dias from the Canadian Mental Health Association says potential clients would be in need of short-term, supportive mental health care, but would not qualify for a hospital admission or incarceration.
Before Christmas, police board members heard how mental health calls are taking up more time for officers on patrol, which means they are contributing more to the cost of policing in the community.
The new safe bed service is expected to be ready by spring.
