A former chief and grand chief is at the Kenora courthouse today for a sentencing hearing. Eli Mandamin of Shoal Lake 39 pled guilty to a charge of sexual intercourse with an underage woman, while he was serving as a band constable in the 1980s.
Defence counsel has argued there are a number of mitigating factors, including Mandamin's years of service to his community and people.
The charge of sexual intercourse with a female between ages of fourteen and sixteen dates back 37 years to the spring of 1981, when Mandamin was employed as a First Nations police constable. He has also been dealing with the tragic losses of two of his sons. Eli Mandamin, Jr., was murdered in Winnipeg. Clifford Fair was murdered in 2008.
During the murder case, Pauline Fair was identified as Clifford Fair's mother. The victim in the case, Pauline Fair, has told the court no publication ban was necessary.
