Wabaseemoong First Nation is in a state of emergency.
Kenora Fire 71, which is roughly 20 kilometres northwest of the community, has grown to over 6,800 hectares since its discovery on July 15.
Chief and Council of Wabaseemoong plan to evacuate vulnerable members of the community (children, elders, those with disabilities and those with asthma or breathing problems) due to heavy smoke and advise them to prepare for 2-3 days in Kenora and surrounding areas.
Overnight, some residents were evacuated to Rat Portage.
Wauzhushk Onigum Nation and Dalles First Nation have also offered assistance as the doors to the CDC Building at 2nd Portage, WON Community Hall and Youth & Wellness Centre are open.
