Kenora Mayor Dave Canfield is looking forward to talks with neighbouring Rat Portage, as they look at an agreement to extend water and sewer services to the First Nation.
"We plan on being good neighbours and doing a joint venture, which could turn into something a lot bigger, as far as training goes," said the mayor, after yesterday's council meeting.
Canfield says the city may be able to help lift a boil water advisory on the First Nation by providing water and sewer services, along with staff training.
"There's a lot of capacity -- or enough capacity -- to deal with Wauzhushk Onigum plus ours," Canfield continued.
According to the mayor, discussions between the two communities started before the amalgamation of Kenora, Keewatin and Jaffray Melick in 2000. In previous years, the mayor said the city didn't have enough capacity to serve both communities, but the situation has changed opening the doors for a partnership.
