Staff from the Lake of the Woods District Property Owners Association (LOWDPOA), along with their 2017 LakeSmart team took action today against an overhelming patch of purple loosestrife in the Laurenson Creek area today.
Purple loosestrife is an invasive plant, which is highly destructive to marsh ecosystems. In the marsh that adjoins Laurenson Creek, loosestrife is dominant throughout three acres.
LOWDPOA released larvae of neogalerucella beetles in the area. The beetles are well-established in the biological control on purple loosestrife.
This pilot project is to ensure a head-start in establishing a local population of the beetles to help in the long-term control of loosestrife around Lake of the Woods.
