Safe Communities Kenora has recognized the efforts of the community recently, during their Annual General Meeting. Local film-maker Andrew Rowe, Mukesh Pokharel from the City of Kenora, past-chair of the committee Maria Bagdonas and Q104 Station Manager Dan McCann all received honours.

Bagdanos received her award for her tireless volunteer work in the community, as well as her dedication to Safe Communities Kenora. She's been involved with the committee since it was created in Kenora, and has stepped down from her role as chair for 2019. The award recognized her years of work with Safe Communities, and promoting safety in the community.

Pokharel was given the award on behalf of the City of Kenora's Operations and Infrastructure Division, as Safe Communities recognized the city's new program to accept unsafe or expired baby products at the Hazardous Waste Depot, which began in 2018.

McCann received the award on behalf of Q104 staff, as ambassadors of safety, and support shown to Safe Communities Kenora through advertising sponsorships to help promote safety in the community.

The volunteer-based committee also presented reports on their past year's work, and what they're hoping to accomplish moving forward. Past-chair Maria Bagdonas notes that Safe Communities is working to reduce distracted driving, improve the use of car seats for children and to eliminate unsafe baby products.

"We don't realize the number of people we deal with on a daily basis, a weekly basis or a monthly basis, that we may provide some assistance to. It could be somebody who takes the extra time to clear their step of snow and ice, provide a child car seat to a family need or help a family attend the community bike ride."

Newly-elected co-chair Shelby Smith, also of Q104, says that her top priority in her new role is to advance the committee's communication efforts.

"I'm looking forward to reorganizing us and moving us into the digital age a bit more," she said.

Their 2019 executive is:

  • Shelby Smith - co-chair
  • Laurie Harkof - co-chair
  • Randi Casey - secretary
  • Kathryn Smolak - treasurer
  • Maria Bagdonas - past-chair
