The Kenora Midget AAA Thistles are headed into the first leg of the race to the Telus Cup National Championships.

They'll be taking on the Thunder Bay Kings starting this weekend in the best-of-five series. Puck drop will be 7:30pm Friday at the Kenora Recreation Centre. Game two is set as a 1:00pm matinee also at the Rec Centre. The Thistles will then head to Thunder Bay next Friday, March 22 for game three. If games four and five are needed, they will be played the 23rd and 24th in Thunder Bay.

The winner of that series will travel to Tisdale, SK for the Telus Cup Western Regionals where they will be up against the best 'AAA' teams from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario. The round-robin tournament winner will then get to represent the West Region in the Telus Cup in Thunder Bay April 22-28.

"The Thunder Bay Kings are a AAA Midget team based in the North American Prospects Hockey League, and will be hosting the Telus Cup this year. They went 13-6-1 in 20 games this season, and was crowned the NAPHL’s champion in the playoffs.

The Thistles placed 9th in league standings following the end of the regular season, with a record of 20-26-2, for 42 points. Only the top 8 teams in the 13 team league make the playoffs."
