ELA gets funding from Northern Heritage Fund

A new research project is being launched at the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area east of Kenora looking at the effect of fish waste fertilizer and wild rice production.

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund is providing $550,000 toward the project.

One of the goals is to cultivate wild rice in paddies instead of the traditional method of in-lake harvesting.

Lakehead University, along with several First Nations in Treaty #3 and a Manitoba company called the Myera Group and involved in the research.

Water monitoring will also be taking place to see the impact on fish in the lakes.

In addition, the ELA is getting almost $150,000 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to rebuild and recover after COVID-19.
