A report on the merger of the two health unit in the region has to be submitted to the province by the end of March.
Medical officer of health for the Northwestern Health Unit Dr. Kit Youg Hoon says this is potentially just the first part of the project.
“If there was a decision to move the next level of discussions, then we would actually need to do another project that would look at it more closely and the planning process and business plan in a lot more detail,” explains Dr. Young Hoon.
Dr. Young Hoon admits the timelines are tight because they were only notified about studying the a potential merger back in August.
“The project only engaged a third party consultant towards the end of last year, so therefore we only have a couple of months to get this done. So it is a very tight process, but it is a very high level view of the topic of merger.”
The study is looking at if the Northwestern Health Unit and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit should merge.
