Dennis Petiquan ‘Mashkiigwatig’ (Mash-kii-gwa-tig), passed away at his home on February 26, 2024 while surrounded by his family.

Dennis was predeceased by his beloved daughter Corrine, his parents Charlie and Mary Ann, his father in law John, mother in law Antoinette, brother Luke, sisters Julia and Marilyn, uncles Dave and Andrew, brother in law Mel and his sister in law Millie.

Dennis is survived by his wife Juanita, sons Raymond, Gregory (Vanessa), grandson Nathaniel, sisters Elsie and Margaret, brothers Barney and Andy, brother in laws George (Mina), Lawrence (Alanna), Elmer (Deanne), Gordon, Robert (Alice) and William, sister in laws Cathy and Maggie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to mention.

Dennis enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, spending time with his family and friends. Dennis was a good provider, father, grandfather and husband. His family looked up to him for advice and guidance, which he would happily give. Dennis will be missed by all who knew him.

Dennis received his University Degree in Biology and Environmental Science at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario. After graduating, Dennis was employed by the Department of Indian Affairs in Thunder Bay, specializing on Land Development on First Nation Reserve Land. He later moved to Kenora, Ontario with his wife Juanita for a new job opportunity with the Kenora Crown Attorney’s Office. Dennis wanted to work for Child Welfare. He landed a job with the Ministry of Child and Family Services in Kenora, Ontario. Once leaving the Ministry, he went on to be employed by Weechi-it-te-win Family Services in Fort Frances, Ontario and by Anishinaabe Abinoojii Family Services in Kenora, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Dennis’s memory which would be appreciated by the family.

A wake service will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 11:00am to 5:00pm at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. A wake service will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 11:00am to 5:00pm at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 11:00am at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre with Pastor Frank Kowal leading a Christian service, followed by a Traditional Service led by Elder Tom Favell with interment to follow at Lake of the Woods Cemetery. Following the interment a feast will be held at the Super 8 – Minis Hall, 240 Lakeview Drive, Kenora, Ontario at 4:00 pm.
