Florence “Sweetie” Miclash
December 10, 1927 – March 24, 2024

“Death brings a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Florence “Sweetie” Miclash (Lunny); in her 97th year. She passed away with her loving family by her side at Pinecrest Home for the Aged, on March 24, 2024. Sweetie was predeceased by her devoted husband George in 2022; her parents, Jack Sr. and Florence Sr.; her brothers and sisters Agnes (Nan), Jackie, Jack, Frank and son-in-law Keith. Sweetie was the youngest and last surviving of her siblings. Florence is survived by her children; Betty Ann of Arizona, Susie, and George Jr (Cheryl), her grandson; Kristopher (Susan) and proud great grandmother to Cole, Julia, and Madison, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Sweetie had fun stories to tell about summers spent on their family island (Lunny’s Island). She often talked about her adventures taking her “Putt Putt” running at 3 miles per hour around the lake. Just like her Dad Jack Sr. Florence also loved animals including her pet deer “Benny”, who they had for 13 years. She also told us that they had pet skunks, who our Dad had the shock of coming face to face with, meeting it coming up the basement stairs while waiting for her to come down the stairs on their first date.
Sweetie completed her grade 12 from Kenora Keewatin District High School, going on to work at Eaton’s catalogue office for a few years. She met George, the love of her life, in 1947 and they married in 1950. They built their home on Third Street South, where they lived nearly 60 years. During that time, they enjoyed living across the street from their son George Jr. and Cheryl and watching their grandson Kristopher grow up.

Florence loved her community and believed in sharing kindness to everyone. She was a devoted member of many groups including, LOW Quilters Guild, Girl Guides, and Pinecrest Tuck Shop. Florence was a regular blood donor, as well as a volunteer at the hospital, and helped with local elections. She also was a devoted member of St. Alban’s and helping with many church functions. Sweetie never needed any recognition for any of the things she did because that’s who she was.

Florence always looked forward to spending time with family, and entertaining friends at the family’s camp on Lunny’s Island.  Family was very important to her – she treated all her nieces and nephews as her own children, never forgetting a birthday or special occasion.

Florence and George went on many casino road trips with their good friends and daughter Susie, which they really enjoyed. They moved from Third Street and spent many happy years at Benedickson Court. Thank you to the staff for their kindness over the years and all the people that they treasured. Mom and Dad relocated to Pinecrest, where they enjoyed visiting with other residents; Mom was known for her warm smile and good-natured personality; many thanks to the staff for their care and kindness that they provided to both Mom and Dad.

No service is planned at this time. Please do an act of kindness in Florence’s memory. In lieu of flowers consider a wish from Sweetie herself asking to “please plant a tree in memory of me”.  Donations could also be made to Auxiliary, or Activation at Pinecrest Home for the Aged; LOW Hospital Foundation, Therapeutic Paws of Canada – Kenora Team, or a charity of your choice.
