Maureen Wasacase
February 5 1944 – April 1 2024

It is with great Sadness, with her Son Graeme by her side, Maureen passed away peacefully Monday morning April 1st at Pinecrest Home for the Aged.

She is predeceased by her husband of 51 years Reuben Wasacase, her parents Edgar Dunn and Eileen Dunn nee McConnell and her brother Bruce Dunn. She is survived by her loving son Graeme, her grandchildren Nadine and Julian, her nieces Sheila Ochapowace, Sheila Wasacase, Allison Wasacase, Karen Wasacase, Kristy Hardiman and nephew Scott Hardiman, and various other nieces, nephews and cousins across the country.

My mother was born in Ottawa February 5, 1944. She was an “army brat” as she would tell you. Her father served in the Canadian Armed Forces and they moved around quite a bit from base to base around eastern and southern Ontario before finally settling in the Ottawa area. In late 1970/early 1971 she met the love of her life, my Dad Reuben, they were married September 25, 1971. In the mid 70’s we moved around a lot going from Ottawa to Regina to Winnipeg and finally settling down here in Kenora. Maureen worked for the Ontario government for about 15 years and then on to the Keewatin Patricia District school board doing clerical work at the various public schools in the Kenora area. She also liked to volunteer her time serving on various boards in the area as well, just to name a few, the multicultural association, The Native Women’s association and finally the Kenora Library Board where she served as chairperson for several years. She was very passionate about the library board as she also served on an Ontario provincial Library Board as well.

She spent a lot of her free time at her most favorite place in the world, her cottage in Norway Bay Quebec. A lot of summers were spent there, not to mention great family memories. She had a lot of friends and family there that will miss her dearly. She loved her family dearly, that was most important to her. Parents, brother, nieces, nephews and grandchildren, she loved us all.

I would like to take this time to acknowledge and thank the staff of the Lake Of The Woods District Hospital for their care of Maureen through the month of October 2023. I would also like to thank the Staff of Pinecrest Home For the Aged, you guys did a phenomenal job caring for my mother in her final months, Thank You. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Maureen’s name. Book donations can also be made to the Kenora Public Library in her name as well.

Cremation has taken place, as per her wishes, a private burial will take place. A celebration of life will be determined at a later date.

I Love You Mom!
