Green Party leader tours region

Despite the distance from northwestern Ontario to Toronto, this region has some issues in common with southern Ontario.

That’s the feeling of Green Party leader Mike Schreiner.

He says there is a lack of affordable housing right across the province.

“The government has to get back into the business of building deeply affordable homes,” says Schreiner during a stop in Dryden.

“Unfortunately, 93 percent of the deeply affordable homes built in the Province of Ontario were built prior to 1995.  That’s when the provincial government stopped supporting non-profit and co-op home builders.”

Schreiner adds that touring the region, it’s the same story, with a lack of affordable housing affecting all communities.

“Everywhere I go people are telling me that we have to build more homes that people can afford in the communities they know and love.”

Schreiner toured several communities in northwestern Ontario over the last couple of days including Dryden and Red Lake and prior to that, he spoke at the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association Conference in Thunder Bay.
